The 2024 Game Awards named "Astro Bot" Best Game

At the 2024 Game Awards, “Astro Bot” won Best Director and other awards. The gala featured “EA Sports FC 25”, “Fallout”, “League of Legends” and “Grand Theft Auto VI”.

Many critically acclaimed video games were released in 2024, but the judges of the industry’s biggest awards ceremony had an easy job choosing the best. None of the five nominated games captured fans and critics like Team Asobi’s Astro Bot, which celebrates 30 years of PlayStation.

The PlayStation 5 3D platformer Astro Bot released in early September. Like Mario, it features a character jumping onto, between, or across (suspended) ledges. It follows Astro Bot as he rescues and collects his fellow robots to power their PlayStation 5-themed mothership.

Astro Bot’s ship is PS5-themed and features several PlayStation-related cameos to celebrate the console’s 30th anniversary. In the game, you rescue robots dressed as Crash Bandicoot, Joel and Ellie from The Last of Us, God of War characters, and more.

What does this mean? Some games have Astro Bot-themed levels. One level lets you play as Nathan Drake from Uncharted, running and gunning your way to the end. These levels cover PlayStation’s history from 1994 to the PlayStation 5.

The game is fun and takes Astro through multiple worlds with unique levels, some of which introduce new gameplay mechanics that change things up regularly. As a platformer fan, Astro Bot was one of my most-played games of 2024 and one of the few times I completed a game 100%.

After its release, Metacritic rated Astro Bot the best game of the year. It ranks 94 on the platform, making it the highest-rated game of 2024 and the 53rd-highest of all time.

Game reviewers praised the game’s creative level design, precise controls, and PS5 DualSense controller use. The innovative controller has many features, including haptic feedback, which vibrates based on the player’s game actions. This works best in snow-themed levels because Astro’s weight presses against the snow.

Due to its popularity, it won four awards: best game direction, best action/adventure game, best family game, and Game of the Year.

Game of the Year was fiercely contested. Balatro, Black Myth Wukong, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Metaphor: Refantazio, and ER were Astro Bot’s opponents. The previous winners were mostly massive single-player role-playing games or games with powerful evocative narratives.

Astro Bot’s win is only the second time a game of this caliber and format has won the award. Another 3D platformer, It Takes Two, came first in 2021.

While I’m glad it won, I shouldn’t ignore the other shortlisted games, especially Balatro, the only indie game nominated for this prestigious award.

Indie games have a low budget or small development team, and Balatro was developed by one person, making its nomination special. The shortlist included Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second installment of the ambitious Final Fantasy remake trilogy, which I liked.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth won best music/score and Balatro best debut indie, independent, and mobile game.

Astro Bot winning these awards is a great accomplishment for 3D platformers and should inspire other developers to create a similar experience. Congrats, Astro Bot and Team Asobi.
